NCAA Penalizes Savannah State Football and Men's Basketball Teams

SAVANNAH, Ga.- The Savannah State football and men's basketball teams  have been penalized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) because of low Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores, the NCAA announced today.

The SSU football team is facing Level One APR penalties and postseason ineligibility for the 2013-14 season while the men's basketball team is facing Level One APR penalties.

"We knew these two teams would be in this position and have already created aggressive improvement plans that address our deficiencies," said SSU director of athletics Sterling Steward Jr. "Over the past year, we have formed an academic unit with three academic advisors and an associate athletic director to facilitate the improvement plans. We have also created our own academic study lab with 18 computer stations for student-athletes to work. We have the full support of our president and university."

Level One penalties restrict practice time so teams can focus on academics. Teams facing this penalty lose four hours and one day of practice time per week. That time must be replaced with academic activities.

Savannah State's other 13 sports all had APR scores over 900. Men's cross country had a score of 976 while the softball program had a score of 968 during the 2011-12 academic year.

"We have 13 teams performing above the minimum APR; including our baseball program that recently won the MEAC Championship while boasting the highest team grade point average in our department," said Steward.  "We have focused our recruiting on individuals who are here to graduate as well as play sports."
