A Bluffton man who led the charge to bring a dog park to the town is under arrest.

Angela McCall-Tanner with the Bluffton Police Department says William Grooms, 42, was taken into custody at approximately 8:00 this morning.

He is accused of stealing at least $10,000 from the organization, Friends of Bluffton Dog Park.

McCall-Tanner says Grooms was the non-profit organization's president and stole thousands of dollars in donations starting in June of last year.

McCall-Tanner tells WSAV the theft was discovered when another board member looked at the bank account and noticed there was not much money left.

According to the organization's website it had received 34 pledges totaling $10,010 as of May 20th.

WSAV spoke with Grooms back in May 2011 about his effort to bring a dog park to Bluffton.

At that time he said he had been working for six years on a dog park.

He told our Holly Bounds the park would be a good place for people and dogs to socialize.

Grooms is charged with Breach of Trust.

He is being held at the Beaufort County Detention Center and is scheduled to have a bond hearing Wednesday morning at 9:00.

Grooms faces up to ten years in prison and/or a fine, officials said.
