RALEIGH, N.C. -

Former North Carolina Senator John Edwards is looking towards the next chapter in his life.

Edwards is considering opening a law firm in Raleigh. It would be a return to law for Edwards, who rose to prominence as a personal injury and malpractice attorney before entering state and national politics.

Edwards was reinstated with the North Carolina State Bar in October of last year, which allows him to practice or give legal advice to friends, officials with the bar say.

The 2004 vice presidential candidate was scheduled to speak at a legal retreat in Orlando this week as he tried to make a public comeback just a year after a jury acquitted Edwards in his trial over campaign finance questions related to a mistress, Rielle Hunter.

Edwards' bid for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination derailed after the National Enquirer reported on his affair. Three months later, Edwards announced he was suspending his campaign; and in August 2008, he admitted to his relationship with Hunter.

A year and a half later, Edwards admitted he fathered a child with Hunter. Soon after, Edwards' wife, Elizabeth Edwards, announced she was seeking a separation from her husband.

In 2011, Edwards was indicted by a North Carolina grand jury on six felony charges, including four counts of collecting illegal campaign contributions. The indictment came after the U.S. Department of Justice conducted a two-year investigation in whether Edwards used more than $1 million in political donations to hide his affair.

After being acquitted of the charges in 2012, on the courthouse steps in Greensboro, Edwards apologized for his indiscretions, acknowledged the support of his family and his love for his children, including the child he had with Hunter.

The two are said to have since broken up after Hunter wrote a book about their affair.

Since the trial, Edwards has refused interviews and has largely remained at his Chapel Hill estate. Associates say he drives his kids to and from school and sporting events.

Elizabeth Edwards died after a long battle with cancer in 2010, and is buried in Raleigh. Their daughter Cate recently began practicing law herself.
