The Wake County Board of Education voted Tuesday night to appoint Cathy Q. Moore as the district's interim superintendent.

Moore will start June 14 and serve until the arrival of the district's next permanent superintendent, the system said.

"I am pleased to help serve our district through this transition," Moore said. "I look forward to continuing to support the academic needs of all Wake County students and their families."

Moore has served as Deputy Superintendent for School Performance since September 2011, and previously worked as area superintendent for the Central Region for three years.

Moore served as principal of Sanderson High from 2000 to 2008. She was also an assistant principal at Apex and Enloe high schools. She began her career in education as a teacher at Enloe.

Moore replaces interim Stephen Gainey. He has served as interim superintendent since September 2012.

Wake County school board chairman Keith Sutton said Tuesday that the board has not selected a superintendent yet, and the process could last at least another week.

Sutton's comments came on a day the board was expected to announce a candidate at the board meeting.

Sutton said late Tuesday afternoon that all three candidates remain interested in the position.

The three finalists for the job are:

  • Dana Bedden, superintendent of the Irving, Texas, Independent School District
  • Ann Clark, deputy superintendent of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
  • James Merrill, superintendent of Virginia Beach City Public Schools.

Clark could not be reached, but her office said she was in meetings all day. Merrill could not be reached but was scheduled to be in Virginia Beach through Tuesday evening. Bedden could not be reached.
