National Hurricane Preparedness Week

Whenever a tropical cyclone threatens South Carolina or Georgia the National Weather Service office in Charleston closely coordinates with the National Hurricane Center.

Today we will discuss the roles of each office during the tropical cyclone forecast process.

National Hurricane Center...

The National Hurricane Center is responsible for monitoring the Atlantic basin for tropical cyclones.

Once a tropical cyclone has formed they will provide the track and intensity forecasts for the storm via public advisories and numerous other products.

These products will contain potential impacts across the United States in broad terms.

If there is a significant threat for tropical storm or hurricane force winds along the coast they will coordinate the issuance of tropical storm or hurricane watches and warnings as appropriate with the local weather forecast offices.

Watches are normally issued when tropical storm or hurricane force winds are possible within 48 hours and warnings are issued when such conditions are expected within 36 hours.
