Fort Bragg Schools release furlough dates

Posted: Updated:
FORT BRAGG, N.C. -

Fort Bragg Schools have announced the furlough days for the upcoming school year, should the furlough be enacted.

The furlough days for Fort Bragg Schools would be Aug. 30 and Sept. 6, 13, 20 and 27.

Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel announced the furloughs to military schools across the country on May 14. Hagel said about 680,000 civilian employees may also be furloughed. The civilian employees would be furloughed for 11 days between July 8 and Sept. 30, allowing only limited exceptions for the military to avoid or reduce the unpaid days off.

The furloughs of up to five days could affect nearly 11,000 Defense Department school staff and teachers, said department officials. The furloughs will be kept to a minimum in order to avoid any effects on accreditation. The five days of furloughs would occur between the beginning of the 2013-14 school year and Sept. 30.

School will be closed for students on any teacher furlough days.

In a memo to the department, Hagel called the decision "an unpleasant set of choices" between furloughing workers or cutting training and flight operations.

Hagel said that the department will be evaluating the budget situation over time and will try to end the furloughs early if at all possible.

Workers will have several days to respond or seek appeals now that the days have been released.

Fort Bragg Schools will open for the district's 5,000 students on Aug. 26.
