Jasper County, S.C. -

YEMASSEE, S.C. - The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating why a passenger tumbled out of a moving car on Interstate 95 and died after landing in front of a tractor-trailer.

Troopers say the fatal incident happened Sunday evening near the Jasper County community of Yemassee. Southbound traffic on I-95 was rerouted for almost three hours.

Highway Patrol Sgt. Bob Beres says the female passenger was riding in a southbound 1993 Buick 4-door driven by a 58-year-old Savannah, Ga., man.

Beres says the unidentified female came out of the moving car and was struck and killed by a Freightliner tractor-trailer headed southbound in the next lane.

The patrol didn't release the passenger's age and other information.

Traffic was halted for at least an hour and a half Saturday night as state patrols worked to learn more about an apparently fatal auto accident on 1-95 southbound near Walterboro South Carolina. According to a motorist who was stuck in the traffic jam,  the incident occurred around 6:25 PM near mile marker 33,  when a tractor trailer rig struck a woman who had been ejected from a car, while traveling south on 95.

It was unclear whether the woman leapt from the car or simply fell out of it. Leigh Moose, a motorist stuck in traffic, tells News 3 that nearby truckers confirmed to her that the victim was in fact struck by a tractor trailer rig, and that the incident caused the highway to actually be closed down at the scene.

Moose also said that a small tent had been erected at the spot where the woman was struck.

The South Carolina State Patrol has also confirmed the chain of events. Their statement says  traffic is being rerouted and motorists will be asked to exit off I-95 at Exit 38 and will be redirected onto the interstate at Exit 33.

They continue to investigate the incident. News 3 will provide more information as it becomes available.
