Pitt Co. Deputies Round Up Delinquent Parents

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. -

More than $57,000 dollars collected. 52 people in Jail. Hundreds of court summons.

The "Pitt County Sheriff's Office" announced the results of their annual "Operation Support Your Child" campaign.

Every year, deputies team up with the department of Social Services to arrest parents not supporting their children.

It's a mission Pitt County Sheriff, Neil Elks, says he takes seriously.

"Often times they'll say well, why do you focus on this area so much when you have killers and robbers out there and people breaking into houses? Because it's all about responsibility. If we teach these parents to be responsible by going out and getting a job and supporting your child. We believe that it gravitates them away from criminal activity," he said.

Parents are posted on a digital billboard on Highway 11. They are also on the Pitt County Sheriff's "Shutterfly" Page: http://www.pittcountychildsupport.shutterfly.com
