3-year-old Tampa boy shot dead; uncle to face judge

Posted: Updated:

The man arrested in connection with the shooting death of a 3-year-old Tampa boy, will appear in front of a judge Thursday morning.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has charged 29-year-old Jeffrey Walker, the uncle of a boy killed at the USF Gardens Apartments on Tuesday night with Culpable Negligence in connection with the death.

Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputies say 3-year-old Jadarrius Speights died at Florida Hospital after he was shot at 13144 North 22nd St on Tuesday evening just after 7 p.m.

Detectives say Walker shared a room with Speights. They believe that he left a loaded 9 mm handgun unsecured in a backpack. Deputies believe Speights got the gun out of the backpack and accidentally shot himself.

According to a press release put out by HCSO, Walker purchased the gun at a gun shop in the Tampa Bay area and has a concealed weapons permit.

The boy's parents, Jasmine Bell and Trentin Speights were in the room at the time of the shooting according to the press release.

Culpable Negligence is a third degree felony.
