WRBL's Our Town tour coming to Columbus on May 24

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. -

After visits to Opelika and Warm Springs earlier this spring, WRBL's "Our Town" tour will make a stop in Columbus on Friday, May 24th.

The station will broadcast "News 3 First Edition" and "News 3 Early Edition" from the banks of the Chattahoochee River - at the Eagle & Phenix loft condominium development.

"We are very excited about the Columbus 'Our Town' newscasts," said WRBL Vice-President and General Manager David Hart. "As the largest city in our market, Columbus is home to most of our employees, many of whom grew up here, went to school here, and it is where they are choosing to raise their own families. This is our chance to celebrate 60 years of growing with the community, and I can't think of a bigger or better event to do it around than Whitewater."

The newscasts will feature special stories on the Whitewater project, the world's longest urban whitewater rafting and kayaking course, which is scheduled to officially open the following day.

The stories will focus on what viewers can expect from the Whitewater experience, a look at the history of the project and the impact leaders across the region believe it can have on tourism both in Columbus and in surrounding communities.

"Whitewater is a real game changer for Columbus," said Hart. "With the opportunity to welcome tourists to our area, we feel like it is critical that we give our viewers a comprehensive view of the project and what it will offer them from both a recreational and economical standpoint," he added.

In addition, Columbus Mayor Teresa Tomlinson is scheduled to appear for a live interview to discuss both Whitewater and other major challenges and opportunities facing Columbus.

The newscast will also feature live performances from local musicians and singers.

The "Our Town" tour is part of a celebration of the station's 60th Anniversary. WRBL first went on the air on November 15, 1953.

Mayor Bill Ham is in his fourth term as mayor of Auburn. When he walks the city sidewalks, family memories come flooding back. His father ran Bill Ham Cleaners on Magnolia Street for 35 years. Standing in front of the old storefront, Ham told me, "At the Georgia game I still had people that would say to me, 'Man, I was in school and your dad helped me do this or that.'
