Mark Sanford in Beaufort Thursday

Posted: Updated:

Both candidates in the SC 1st district congressional race have been on the campaign trail hoping to drum up extra support before next week’s election.  Former Governor Mark Sanford made it clear on his stop in Beaufort Thursday that while some recent endorsements help, he says his opponent Elizabeth Colbert Busch is outspending him on the airwaves four or five ads to his one.

"But that can be offset by friends talking to friends and I'd really ask for your help on that front,” Sanford said at the Beaufort Chamber of Commerce forum Thursday.

He addressed a group of mostly supporters - answering their questions on topics like unemployment and port issues, then asking for their vote next week.  His opponent Elizabeth Colbert Busch is outspending him in big ways.

"We're outgunned on that front,” Sanford said.  “I mean, we're outgunned like four or five commercials to my one because as I said you've got a million dollars in outside money coming in."

Many ads largely focus on lack of character and betrayal of the state when Sanford disappeared in 2009 to visit his then-mistress in Argentina.

"What would you say to the voters to believe that we can trust you again?" we asked Sanford Thursday.

"I would say two things.  I would say if you look at my track record on taxes and spending...a number of taxpayers have come up to me and said, ‘you know what Mark? You've never let me down as a taxpayer. You've always stood up for my interests in terms of watching out for my pocketbook or wallet, and I really appreciate that.’  I think the nature of a political ad is to take on factoid and add something to it and attempt to redefine who you are as a person as a way of winning a political contest.  I would say at the end of the day I don't think that's right.  I don't think it's a fair way to approach an election.  Do I have blemishes?  Yes.  Do we all have blemishes?  Yes,” he said.

Sanford's opponent Elizabeth Colbert Busch will be at the Beaufort Chamber tomorrow at noon for a public forum.  The two face off next Tuesday May 7th.
