Hilton Head Christian Academy Serving Healthy Lunches Daily

With families always on the go - it can be a struggle serving your kids a well-balanced meal.  With that in mind, Hilton Head Christian Academy is seeing that students get a healthy meal every day at school.

At lunchtime Monday you could find one chef outside on the grill, another inside manning the fresh vegetables that complete the day’s healthy lunch at Hilton Head Christian Academy. There they serve healthy meals-hot or cold-every school day.

The idea is three-fold: students eating healthy, seeing that it's easy to prepare, and reaping the benefits that come from this type lifestyle.

"Right at this time of day you're starting to get tired and you want to go home but it's good to have the meal that gets you full and you can get right back to class right after lunch,” student Shelby Allen said.

The healthy aspect does not follow a calorie count because Chef Brooks Rinehart says some very active kids need a little extra.

"We stay away from fatty foods a lot, everything is really fresh,” Rinehart said.  “It's back to the basics.  You've got a piece of chicken or salmon, rice and potatoes, we use all whole wheat pastas when we cook, the wraps are whole wheat.  The buns on the sandwiches are whole wheat.  It's simple cooking, really,” he said.

And to make this even better, students are paying even less than they did in previous years when they were served fast food sandwiches and chips.

"They get all of this meal for well under five dollars,” Health and Wellness Director Wendy Cummings said.

Cummings added that students are eating foods they've never tried--and liking them!

This has really been a hit at the school and they're expanding the concept in a few ways.

For example, Tuesday, Chef Brooks will host a cooking class to show how to prepare some of the favorites he serves them.
