SAVANNAH, GA -

Officials with the Chatham County Sheriff's Office say former Chatham County Correctional Officer turned himself in late Wednesday night.

Lewis Lane worked as a corrections officer with the Sheriff's Office until the allegations of sexual abuse arose, and he was fired.

A Recorder's Court warrant was issued on April 4, 2013, for Sexual Assault on a Person in Custody, following a criminal investigation conducted by the Chatham County Sheriff's Office.  The case was referred to the District Attorney's Office.

While at the sheriff's office, Lane is currently being housed in protected custody.

Chatham County Detention Center has a Zero Tolerance Policy concerning sexual misconduct with those in-custody and follow Federal Prison Rape Elimination Act.

To meet these guide lines the Chatham County Sheriff's Office established an internal and external hotline for inmates to report such acts.

The sheriff's office also trains investigators to handle such complaints, along with extra training for the Corrections Bureau Staff.
