Late Rally Earns Jim Colbert & Bob Murphy Demaret Division Title in Overtime at Liberty Mutual Insurance Legends of Golf
SAVANNAH, GA – Jim Colbert and Bob Murphy made a birdie on the first extra hole to defeat Frank Beard and Larry Ziegler and win the Demaret Division title (players 70 and over) at the Liberty Mutual Insurance Legends of Golf on Tuesday. Each team finished with a 36-hole score of 15-under 131.
Playing two groups behind Beard and Ziegler, Colbert and Murphy birdied five holes on the back nine, including back-to-back birdies on Nos. 17 and 18 to claim a spot in the playoff. On the first extra hole, Murphy stuck a pitching wedge to three-feet from 100 yards and converted the birdie opportunity for the win. The loss was especially disappointing for Beard and Ziegler, who lost in a one-hole playoff a year ago to J.C. Snead and Gibby Gilbert in the Demaret Division.
"It was great today how we finished by making birdies on seven of the last 11 holes and that was just to get us into a tie," said Colbert. "Then my pal (Murphy) birdied the first playoff hole to get the win for us."
The pair had started the day two strokes behind Beard and Ziegler, the first-round leaders.
"When we started the day I thought we'd need 15-under to win, but Jim walked over and said probably 16-under. Boy were we close," said Murphy, an 11-time winner on the Champions Tour.
Colbert had won a pair of Legends Division titles in this event previously, teaming with Andy North for back-to-back wins in 2000 and 2001 when the event was staged at the World Golf Village. Colbert and Murphy did win successive titles as teammates at the 1995 and 1996 Diners Club Matches.
Lee Trevino and Mike Hill, who won four times in the Legends Division, finished third, one stroke shy of a playoff, while the marquee team of Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player finished tied for seventh at 9-under-par.
The victory earned Colbert and Murphy $60,000 each, while Beard and Ziegler each earned $34,000.
