Sanford On Latest Poll That Shows Colbert Busch Leading Congressional Race

Posted: Updated:

Republican Mark Sanford trails behind his opponent Elizabeth Colbert Busch in the South Carolina first district congressional race according to a poll released Monday.

Sanford's visit to the Bluffton Tuesday was mainly to publicly ask why Colbert-Busch won't engage in a debate.

There is one scheduled next Monday in Charleston- the first and likely only time the two will go face to face.

Public Policy Polling released a poll Monday that says Colbert Busch is the choice by likely voters 50 percent compared to Sanford's 41 percent.

"I think it's well known that that's a democratic poll and everybody is going to have their different bias, their different take and that's ok," Sanford said.  "It goes with the world of politics.  Isn't that the nature of the political process?  Everyone tries to jockey for their advantage or disadvantage, so I'd say it is what it is. I'm paying attention to one poll and that's the one on May 7th," he said.

The last Democrat to hold this seat was Mendel Jackson Davis whose term ended in 1981.

Sanford has never lost an election.
