School bus driver accused of groping female students

Posted: Updated:

According to Charleston Police, 47-year-old Macneil Deas of Adams Run is accused of groping juveniles on his school bus while driving students in the Charleston County School District.

Police records show Deas was accused in November of touching a young girl's chest and squeezing her buttocks. Two months after that accusation he was also accused by a different 7-year-old girl.

At least one of the victims claimed to be afraid to come forward with the information and did not tell her parents about the incident right away.

The Charleston County Clerk's website shows Deas was charged in December with criminal sexual misconduct and attempting lewd acts with a minor under 16. For that charge he was released on the same day when he posted $15,000 surety bond.

In January Deas was charged with criminal sexual assault and battery and let go on the same day, posting a $10,000 surety bond.

Deas' record shows he's had several traffic violations including vehicle accidents and negligent driving.

News 2 asked Durham Bus Services if the traffic violations and criminal sexual conduct charges are searched for during the hiring process. A Durham spokesperson said in an e-mail, "He was put on leave in November, I am trying to get a more specific date for you. Durham has a thorough screening & hiring process, I can get you further information on that - I just don't have it immediately available."

The Charleston County School District responded to News 2 on Wednesday morning with a letter written to parents dated April 19. In the letter, superintendent Dr. Nancy McGinley claims she was knowledgeable of the November accusation but at that time the district thought it was an "isolated event." McGinley states in the letter that she was informed on April 17 that two criminal charges were filed against Deas.

"As a precaution, Charleston County School District (CCSD) is alerting parents of students who may have come into contact with this driver by being a rider on school bus 616," McGinley wrote.

Deas is expected in court in May and again in June for the criminal sexual conduct charges.

Rough Weather Causes Tree To Collapse onto House

Our spate of nasty spring weather this weekend didn't just bring rain into the picture. In some parts of our immediate area wind was also a major part of the weather scene. A good example of this is the house in Liberty County that was walloped by a tree. Apparently the house, located in the 4700 block of East Ogelthrope Highway was damaged when a massive tree fell on it. Neighbors believe heavy winds caused the tree to topple onto the building. The good news here is no one was injured. But t...
