More Details in Officer-Involved Shooting

Posted: Updated:

A man was "swiftly" approaching a Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Officer when he was shot.

That's what a police investigation revealed this week.

The findings of the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police investigation into the shooting of Timothy Maurice Williams by a Metro officer were shared with the Chatham County District Attorney's Office this week.

The two departments will confer on how the case proceeds.

The 23 year old Williams was shot at West 44th and Barnard streets about 3am on April 9.

A Metro officer responded to a call of multiple shots being fired when a resident waived him down. She was on the telephone with Emergency 911 to report that men were trying to break into her house.

The officer found Williams in the fenced back yard after the men with him had scaled a fence to escape. Williams, moved swiftly towards him.

"We have tried to provide all the information we can," Police Chief Willie Lovett said. "But that has been complicated by the nature of the case. Both the police officer and the victim have rights we must protect."

The investigation was slowed when the officer cited advice of counsel in declining to discuss the incident with investigators until ordered to do so days later by Metro Police Chief Willie Lovett.

Since the shooting, the investigation has revealed that the three men were attempting to elude others who had been firing weapons at them when they jumped over the fence into the backyard.

More than 20 spent cartridges were found in the area.

Williams was treated at Memorial University Medical Center.
