The Push To Get More Movies In Beaufort

Posted: Updated:

Forrest Gump, The Big Chill-- two popular movies filmed in Beaufort.  But we haven't had any big names since before 2000, and the chamber is doing all it can to get lawmakers to help change that.

In the movie that coined that phrase about a box of chocolates came more than scenery in the local flavor it brought us.

"Who's to say whether our chocolate was what was in the box that they were eating, but what I know is they bought a lot of chocolate," Joy King of The Chocolate Tree said.

Forrest Gump is just one of the many movies that have given Beaufort's Chocolate Tree a boost.

"Plus it brings a lot of tourists into town. They want to see where the movies were filmed, so that helps a lot," King said.

That's just the start of the perks a movie can bring to a city like Beaufort...which is why Beaufort Chamber President Blakely Williams crafted and sent an email Tuesday to all 1,600 of the chamber's members, urging them to contact their senators to give a film incentive bill another reading.

The reason it's been so long since Beaufort's been under the lights is the competition is tough.  Neighboring states offer far better tax incentives and rebates that put South Carolina out of the playing field.  It's a situation Williams said needs to change for the sake of jobs and revenue.

"We know that it will create millions of dollars in economic impact through capital investment, this is determined by the board of economic advisors. We've also seen that tons of jobs can be created by this. It's something that could be low impact, which is important," Williams said.

To give you some perspective on just how other states are luring movies their way-- in 2010 and 2011, South Carolina had two movies filmed in the state.  North Carolina had 24 and Georgia had 24 just in 2011 alone.
