Driver rescued as truck dangles from Va bridge

Posted: Updated:
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -

Emergency crews have rescued the driver of a tractor-trailer who was stuck inside the cab of her truck while it dangled from the Monitor-Merrimac Bridge Tunnel.

The tractor-trailer apparently went out of control on Interstate 664, striking the bridge Monday morning. The truck then caught fire as the cab hung over the bridge that connects Suffolk and Newport News.

The driver, fortunately, only suffered minor injuries.

State police had to shut down the southbound lanes of traffic. That's because large amounts of diesel fuel were spilled during the crash.

Newport News Fire Department, the Virginia Marine Police, Virginia State Police, Portsmouth Police Department, Suffolk Police and Fire Department, and Coast Guard responded with boats and bridge highway crews to the scene of the accident.

"This incident highlights the excellent and immediate response by multiple agencies," said Capt. John Little, the commander of Sector Hampton Roads. "It is the result of partnerships and joint training conducted within the Hampton Roads emergency response community."
