Beaufort, Jasper Unemployment Rates Decline In February

Posted: Updated:
BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. -

Some good news for job seekers in the lowcountry.

According to the South Carolina Department of Employment, unemployment is down from 8.7% to 8.6%.

And locally, Beaufort and Jasper saw bigger drops.

"Actually we are seeing a downward trend, and the numbers obviously reflect that of course. It's always great when we can put South Carolinians back to work," said Phillip Byrd.

Phillip Byrd works for South Carolina Works, which is the extension of the department of employment, and he's seen first-hand that businesses are hiring.

"We do have employers coming in on a regular basis seeking experienced workers, and we have the resources to help fill those employment needs."

The South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce released data last week saying the unemployment rate in Beaufort and Jasper County was actually down between January and February. The state added jobs in almost every sector, including more than 4,000 jobs in the leisure and hospitality industry, which we all know is a big deal in Beaufort and Jasper.

"We are moving heavily into the hospitality season around here, and we're very heavy in that in the Beaufort and Jasper County areas, so we're seeing an increase in the number of openings in that area, and manufacturing is also making a turnaround in the state, and we are seeing openings in that in Beaufort and Jasper County as well."

And although some of the upswing is seasonal, experts say they believe this trend could continue.

"Beaufort County traditionally has one of the lower unemployment rates in the state, and I am optimistic and hopeful that will continue."
