Island to host 1st annual Tybee Gay Days event

Posted: Updated:

Spring is here, and that means we can expect to see more outdoor events and festivals in our area.

They bring hundreds, sometimes thousands of people into town, which you would think would be a win-win.

An announcement went out today that Tybee island will host its first-ever gay and lesbian festival next month, and that seems to be creating some controversy.

Not all of the buzz from our viewers has been positive. However, out on Tybee today, the people we talked to could not have been more excited.

The event is called "Tybee Gay Days" and it will not only be great for businesses, but folks on the island say it should be good for the environment as well.

"This is right before the height of our season, so this is a kind of event that we are trying to encourage," says Tybee Mayor, Jason Buelterman.

Visitors come from near and far to enjoy everything Tybee has to offer. Now, another festival is scheduled to do just that and it's the first of its kind.

"I think Tybee has a lot of lesbian and gay in our community, and we have always been very welcoming to them," Buelterman adds.

"There are a lot of folks who own businesses, who are opening their arms to these folks."

Tybee Gay Days will be spread over an entire weekend. But unlike other festivals at the beach, this one is taking place where it's needed the most, inside area businesses.

It's a welcome sight for Stacey Jarrell, who owns several businesses on the island.

"These are professionals that come from all over the southeast, who want to come help support our island. They are not looking to do something disorganized. All of their events will be held inside well respected businesses. They will be staying at Ocean Front Cottages and hotels; they will be dining out and shopping."

But they are doing something unexpected…a beach cleanup.

"It's always exciting to hear that you have people who want to come to Tybee and will respect it," she says.

"They are going to make sure that they pick up and clean up. And they will actually pick up from the guests that were here the day before, that are not related to their event."

Mayor Buelterman says it could be a model for other events in the future. And no matter how different the event night seem, as long as it's done right, all are welcome.

"We have any number of ethnic groups or religious groups that want to come out, and if those folks want to come out here and enjoy a couple days at the beach, that's awesome. We are appreciative that they want to come out here." is the official organizer of the festival and it will take place May 3rd through the 5th.
