BLUFFTON, S.C. -

A 12-year-old Bluffton Middle School student is facing expulsion after an assault on a teacher that sent her to the hospital.

Lt. Joe Babkiewicz with the Bluffton Police Department says the male student assaulted the teacher, identified as Ms. Malisa Hart, this morning.

Hart sustained minor injuries to her head and was taken to Hilton Head Hospital for treatment, Babkiewicz said.

The 12-year-old was taken into custody by a school resource officer and was charged with Assault and Battery and Disturbing Schools.

The child has been suspended from school and faces an expulsionary hearing, Babkiewicz said.

According to the Bluffton Middle School website, Hart is an ESOL teacher.
