MCSD school board member responds to allegations of district overpaying for legal fees

Posted: Updated:

On Monday evening, Muscogee County School Board Member Naomi Buckner responded to local attorney Frank Myers' allegations that the district spends too much money on legal fees.

Last week, Myers said when compared to other districts in the state, Muscogee County spends more per student on legal fees. He claimed because of that, students are going without materials they need.

But Buckner said a survey of all principals in the district showed no schools had a shortage of books. She also said the only conclusion to be drawn from the information presented is that when the total legal fees are divided by the number of students in the district, Muscogee County does spend more on legal fees.

Buckner said, "That's the only thing you can get from that. You can't infer from that we are spending exorbitant fees on legal fees, you can't make broader conclusions."

Myers called the comments curious and challenged someone to come up with a more credible method to compare legal fees throughout various districts.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation's probe into whether Myers or State Senator josh McKoon tried to improperly pressure board members into changing legal counsel is still on-going. Investigators say they will spend some time reviewing the facts and information before making a decision on whether a full-fledged investigation needs to be launched.

Also at Monday night's school board meeting, the board approved the re-zoning of the Aaron Cohn Middle School, which impacts 800 students.

Nate Sanderson, representing the Columbus area NAACP, spoke to members and encouraged them to move forward with the proposal to ban corporal punishment throughout the district. That measure will sit on the agenda for 30 days before the board can vote on it in April
