There Will Be Something New to See Along HHI Bike Paths

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -

Bicycles are a big deal on Hilton Head and now it will be easier for folks to get around on two wheels thanks to ten new informational kiosks being added to the island.

There are currently 20 kiosks at various locations which were installed in 2007. But they're outdated and expensive to replace. So the plan to add new and improved kiosks has been in the works for a while and town officials say they need to get this done before tourist season kicks into gear.

"We've expanded a significant amount of pathway segments since 2007, so we want to make sure our information is current, that folks have access to the information, and can find their way around during busy times," said Shawn Colin.

And one of the busiest time on Hilton Head is during the Heritage golf tournament--which officials say is the deadline to have these kiosks ready to go.

"With a lot of our projects we sort of have a blackout period during key weeks so we don't want to have a lot of construction going on during those weeks, the goal is to have those installed and functional before the week of Heritage," said Colin.

And while these new maps will be good for tourists, they'll also be good for the town in terms of saving them money, officials say the old kiosks cost over $300 to update and repair whereas the new ones would only be a fraction of that.

But that's not all, Colin says they plan on utilizing new technology as well that you can use with your smart phone.

"We've looked at adding a QR code which is a small scan code basically that we are going to put on the kiosks and folks with those devices will be able to pull up web-based information, specific routes, the full pathway map, and additional information like bike safety...and eventually that could evolve into events or other local activity."
