A scare Wednesday morning for neighbors in downtown Beaufort.
A chemical commonly used by jewelers sickened employees of Modern Jewelers on Bay Street.
Beaufort County EMS and Beaufort firefighters were called at about 9:30 a.m. to 807 Bay Street and found three workers coughing and complaining of nausea.
Emergency crews blocked off Bay Street between Carteret and Charles Streets while they cleared the scene.
"Once we had the hazard removed, our job was to ventilate the business, check again for fumes, and when it was all clear, we let the owner re-open the store and we re-opened Bay Street to traffic," Beaufort Fire Chief Sammy Negron said.
The area was closed for about two hours.
We're told all three store employees are doing just fine.
