HHI Wine & Food Fest Kicks-Off Sping Season

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -

It has been a week of food, friends, and fun at the annual Wine and Food Festival on Hilton Head Island.

Winemakers from around the world sent in more than 700 bottles to be crowned "best in show"

"This is the 28th year for the event, and this year's the biggest one we've ever had. The quality of wines, the quality of people, it's been terrific," said festival chair, Tammy Bream.

The festival really is about uncorking some fun for the more than 5,000 guests expected at events this past week.

"Absolutely this is a can't-miss event, we come every year. It's pretty amazing, really good food, really good wine, it's an amazing day," said patron, Lance Hanlin.

And with the wine, comes the revelers. .each event was packed with patrons looking to pair gourmet wines with some great local food at dinners this past week.

"The Great Chefs of the South" wine dinners this past week we had several every night, and they were all sold out. The average cost of a ticket was $80 per person.. so if you think about it there's 40-50 at each dinner, spending money at the restaurants, the retail shops love us!" said Bream.

Officials say this event serves as a great boost to the local economy and kick-starts us right into tourist season. and as we know that's the lifeblood of this economy.

"Hilton Head is a tourist destination, and this has a huge fiscal impact on the local economy no doubt about it," said Rep. Andy Patrick (R-Beaufort)

There should be final numbers on attendance in a few weeks.
