OPELIKA, Ala. -

Mayor Gary Fuller issued a proclamation this week declaring March 12th as "WRBL Our Town Day" in the city of Opelika.

Fuller issued the proclamation at the beginning of Tuesday night's council meeting at Opelika City Hall.

In issuing the proclamation, Fuller congratulated WRBL on the celebration of its 6060th Anniversary in 2013.

The station's Our Town project involves a series of live newscasts, beginning March 12th at Courthouse Square in downtown Opelika as part of its year-long celebration commemorating its November 15, 1953 sign-on date.

The station will broadcast portions of "News 3 Early Edition" and "News 3 Evening Edition" beginning at 5 p.m. Eastern/4 p.m. Central.

In accepting the proclamation, WRBL Vice-President and General Manager David Hart thanks Fuller, the City of Opelika and The Opelika Chamber of Commerce for their support of the Our Town Project. "We are so grateful to Mayor Fuller and to everyone in Opelika who has welcomed us into the community over these past two weeks," said Hart. "We are excited about putting a spotlight on Opelika and everything this community has to be proud of."

During the newscasts, anchors Teresa Whitaker and Phil Scoggins will deliver live reports on the history and the success Opelika has had in diversifying its economy in recent years. Whitaker and Scoggins will also interview local leaders on projects designed to make life better for the citizens of Opelika.

In addition, First Alert Chief Meteorologist Bob Jeswald will take viewers into the kitchen of Ma Fia's Italian Restaurant for a taste of the town.

News 3 Sports Director Jonathan Huskey will focus his attention on Opelika sports teams, and efforts to improve athletic facilities at both Opeilka High School and elsewhere in the community.

The Opelika High School Jazz band and the Opelika Middle School cheerleaders will also be on hand to perform live during the newscasts.

"We really want to encourage everyone to come out and see how what goes in to producing a live newscast from outside the studio," said Hart. "We look forward to meeting our viewers and showing them how it all works."
