Update: Chatham Co. Youth Commissioners Tour East Coast, Meet with Legislators

On Monday, Chatham County Youth Commissioners woke up to below freezing temperatures in our Nation's Capitol to attend the 2013 National Association of Counties Annual Legislative Conference (NACo), where they interacted with County Commissioners from across the country. The Youth Commission presented a seminar on "Socializing, Sipping, Sexting and Smoking" to give youth perspectives on these issues and how they relate to HIV/AIDS.  CCYC members also shared the benefits of local youth empowerment and engagement by forming Youth Commissions in their communities.

The Youth Commission then traveled to Baltimore, MD to visit the National Aquarium, where they experienced a 3-hour showcase of more than 16,000 animals. Tired, but excited, they headed to Philadelphia, PA for the night.

This morning, students traveled to New York City to tour the World Trade Center Memorial and explore historic sites. Tonight, they'll check out "Spiderman" on Broadway. Tomorrow, look for them on national TV as CCYC members become a part of the Today Show audience in Rockefellar Plaza.

They represent the very best of young people from public and private high schools and community organizations  around the area. Now, members of the Chatham County Youth Commission are at it again. They are on the road- traveling up and down the east coast as part of their 2013 Annual Legislative Tour.

The trek will take students through Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and New York City in less than five days- mixing sight-seeing with some serious business.

Their journey began overnight Sunday as the group made its way north from Savannah to Mount Vernon, VA, the home of the nation's first President, George Washington. Students had a chance to gain a first hand look at history as they toured the mansion where Washington lived and died; visited his expansive plantation and the animals therein; and paid their respects to General Washington, his wife, Martha, the 25+ relatives buried on the plantation, and more than 150 slaves in unmarked graves throughout the site.

CCYC members then visited the Nation's Capitol and various historical sites including the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, Korean War Memorial and the King Memorial before ending the evening at the Verizon Center watching the Washington Wizards beat the Philadelphia 76's.

For the 17th year, the Youth Commission will also participate in the National Association of Counties' Annual Legislative Conference also known as NaCo. Today, members will meet with County Commissioners from throughout the country. They remain the only youth group in the country to attend this conference. Members will present various workshops ranging from how to address teen issues of Sexting, Sipping, Smoking, Socializing and Teen Domestic Violence.  This afternoon they will travel to Baltimore, Maryland to visit the National Aquarium before heading to Philadelphia, PA for the evening.

Other highlights include venturing to New York City to tour the World Trade Center Memorial. Students will also enjoy a Broadway musical and join the Today Show audience in Rockefeller Plaza.

Tune in to Coastal Sunrise each morning for live updates from the tour!
