Lowcountry Students Compete in Academic Bowl

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -

It was a morning filled with questions and competition for students in Beaufort County.

Teams from each high school in the district competed in the second annual Academic WorldQuest Competition.

This battle of wits involves knowing world facts and current events---and it took months of studying for students to be ready.

"The reading, there was so much reading to do and it was hard to know where to start because there was just so much of it, but we all focused on our own topics and it paid off," said Shaye McAuliffe, of Beaufort High's team.

"You had to study the study guide that they gave you and really just watch the news.and just know your geography and where countries are and how things relate in the world and you'll do fine," said Austin Mix.

Which is easy to say when you are part of the winning team.-----after a real nail-biter and a tie-breaker, the team from Beaufort High School pulled out the win

"I'm just so ecstatic right now!" McAuliffe exclaimed.

While there was a lot of reading to be done, the team says dividing up their strengths and weaknesses was the key to the winning strategy.

"So we all focused on the main categories of geography, current events, the ones we should all study and then we all specialized in each segment. like Austin as the Cuban Missile Crisis, Shaye was the environmental sustainability. we each picked our own segment so when that time came we looked to that person for like the final answer," said Ciaran Cordial.

And it worked perfectly--now it's onto Washington D.C. to compete in the finals.

The members of the winning team include Austin Mix, Shay McAuliffe, Ciaran Cordial, and Michael Schwartz.
