Savannah Man Charged in July Shootout

SAVANNAH, GA -

One victim of a deadly shootout last July is now arrested and charged with offenses related to the shooting.

Savannah Chatham Metro Police say 23 year old Raheem Saamad Hicks of East 39th Street, was arrested by federal marshals from the South East Regional Firearms Task Force, Metro violent crimes detectives and Crime Suppression Unit officers and canine officers Friday morning.

He has been charged with possession of a firearm by in commission of a crime, terroristic threats and acts and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon stemming from the shooting. He also faces four unrelated felony warrants for robbery, possession of illegal substances with intent to distribute and two counts of burglary.

Police say Hicks was the driver of a white Hyundai Sonata that had crashed into a house on Sebring Lane after a shootout across a grassy courtyard in the 200 block of South Avalon Drive that night. He had stopped in front of a house and shortly afterward had become involved in an altercation with at least one other man.

In the ensuing shootout, police say Hicks and Richard Antonio Jiles,  a passenger in the car, had been struck by gunfire and the car had traveled across the lawn to the house. Hicks was taken to Memorial University Medical Center by a neighbor and Jiles was transported by ambulance.

Soon after, Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police say they found the body of Rasheed Johnson behind a nearby house on Avalon where he had collapsed after the shooting. He was declared dead at the scene.

Police found one gun under his body, another on the front seat of the car and a third in the grassy lawn.

The investigation revealed the shooting had taken place after an ongoing dispute between Johnson and Hicks.
