Today was monumental for Catholics around the world. Benedict's journey into retirement began with an emotional farewell from the Vatican. Before leaving the Vatican, he pledged obedience to his successor As the Pope began his transition into another chapter of his life many parishioners in Savannah gathered at The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. They celebrated a mass of thanksgiving filled with prayer for Benedict. Bishop Gregory Hartmayer reflects on today with mixed emotions. "Because it was Benedict the 16th who made me the Bishop of Savannah, and for that I'm very grateful and will always have a relationship with him because of that. But I'm also glad for the church because the church is seeing that change is possible." Before leaving the Vatican, he pledged obedience to his successor. Cardinals will begin their first preliminary meetings on Monday they've set a time for the conclave that will decide the next Pope.

Savannah's "March Against Monsanto" begins with a rally at noon Saturday at Forsyth Park. It will be followed with a march that is scheduled to get underway at 2:00pm.
