SAVANNAH, GA -

More affordable housing is opening up in Savannah to help low income families achieve the dream of owning.

Savannah Gardens is opening its second housing phase and is inviting locals to check it out. An open house is being held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 23 Inspiration Way, just off Pennsylvania Ave and Crescent.

The city also has a Dream Maker program to help those who qualify with home buying assistance which includes offering affordable loans for down payments.

Bonnie Kelly never thought she'd be able to buy a brand new home.

"It was real emotional, being a single parent of three-year-old twins, it even gets to me now because we have our home," said Kelly.

The realization of home ownership is still pretty new for Kelly who moved in to the first phase of Savannah Gardens' homes in December.

"Having the wood floors, super easy cleanup," said Kelly.

Kelly also loves the savings her energy efficient 12-hundred square foot home is spitting out.

"My electric bill was $118. That's going to be over a $400 saving on my electric bills that I was previously paying," said Kelly.

The Director of the Community Housing Services Agency, Darrel Daise, who helped redevelop the land where the Strathmore Estates once stood says the new development gives off a positive vibe.

"It really revitalized the whole area you get a different feeling when you go down Pennsylvania Avenue now once you hit the road you just get a good feeling," said Daise.

There's also a mixture of homes for different incomes.

"We have homes that we can sell to people that are 80 percent or below the area medium income and we have lots and homes that are 120 percent of the area medium income and we even have market rate lots", said Daise.

Kelly said with the city's Dream Maker program she was able to provide stability for her family.

"Everybody wants to be a homeowner, have that dream, that American dream, and I have that now," said Kelly.
