SAVANNAH, GA -

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police temporarily will be adding a new asset to its resources during the St. Patrick's Day festivities when a 30-foot observation tower is erected in Ellis Square.

The portable Skywatch Tower is being loaned to the department by Integrated Systems of Alpharetta for test and evaluation. The tower has been used by used by many 140 law enforcement agencies including New York, Miami and New Orleans to provide additional observation during large events. It will be placed in the square on Friday afternoon, March 15, and removed the following Sunday.

"This gives us just one more opportunity to observe the actions during the celebration as we deal with such a large increase in people in the Downtown area," said Police Chief Willie Lovett. "It's an exciting time for so many people – residents and visitors alike – and our goal is make sure everyone remains safe. It will be interesting to see how it might be of use to us."

The SkyWatch is equipped with air conditioning, thermal and day cameras, tinted windows, flood lights, diesel generator, shore power,  98-gallon fuel tank, electrical outlets and operational components.
