Participants Still Needed for Life Saving Cancer Study

The American Cancer Society is still in need of volunteers to take part in a historic cancer research study that is now taking place in our area.  The ACS hopes to enroll at least 400 participants across the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry in the Cancer Prevention Study 3 by this Friday.

Even though it doesn't take a lot of time, the American Cancer Society says the study can help save lives.  Back in the 1950's when the Cancer Prevention Studies began, cancer was almost always a death sentence.  Today there are more than 13 million survivors and ACS officials say the lessons learned from previous studies have kept countless others from hearing the worlds "You have cancer."

To participate in the study you must be between the age of 30 and 65 and never have been diagnosed with cancer.  Volunteers will have to give a small blood sample, take a waist measurement, and complete a brief survey.   Appointments are still available, but walk-ins are also welcomed.

Enrollment is taking place over the next three days in Savannah at the following locations:

*Wednesday, 11am-3pm, Savannah Civic Center

*Thursday, 3pm-7pm, West Chatham YMCA

*Friday, 7am-11am, Habersham YMCA

Following enrollment, you will periodically receive mailed surveys at home every few years to update your information. You will also receive annual study newsletters to update you on research taking place in the Cancer Prevention Studies.  For more information about CPS-3, you can visit www.cps3savannah.com call Amy Riesinger at (912) 660-2694, or call toll-free 1-888-604-5888.
