Rain May Help Ogeechee River

Posted: Updated:
EFFINGHAM COUNTY -

Ed Myrick, the director of Effingham County's Emergency Management Agency, has been monitoring levels in the Ogeechee River for several days now. The river borders most of the western edge of Effingham County. Myrick says more than three and a half inches of rain has fallen in the past few days pushing the river's level to 11.8 feet. While flood stage is technically at nine feet, Myrick says other than some minor flooding, no problems have been reported.

He says the river today is a much different site than its low of two feet a year ago during the drought. Myrick also thinks concerns about pollution after the big fish kill in May of 2011 may be helped by the influx of rain. "Hopefully, we will have some kind of flushing effect," he says.

Myrick says he does expect river levels to rise a bit more so residents should stay informed.
