Sequester Threatens Meals on Wheels Program

SAVANNAH, GA -

If those forced budget cuts go through, senior citizens living on tight budgets could be hurt.  Meals on wheels in Georgia would be pushed to serve 4-million fewer meals.
We visited the meals on wheels kitchen in Savannah this morning, where employees were busy preparing fresh hot meals for 900 clients.
They get three meals a day through Senior Citizens Incorporated.  Those in charge of the program say if forced budget cuts go through, many would suffer.
"It could prove to be devastating to our area's local seniors, essentially because the only meal that many of the seniors receive a day is the meal that we provide, and it's the single most nutritious meal that they receive," says Program Director Kesha Gibson-Carter
Meal service is provided to 4 counties-- Chatham, Effingham, Liberty, and Bryan.
Those involved are hopeful the crisis will be avoided.
"In the face of potential cuts to the program, you know, we still have seniors who are waiting in the wind, waiting to be approved for a service that's essentially... It's questionable if this program will even be available to them. So it does not make my heart happy to know that this will not be a service for someone who really needs it."
Meals on Wheels employees prepare and deliver over 3500 meals per week plus an additional 700 meals are prepared for our areas senior activity centers.
