SAVANNAH, GA -
The Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at Armstrong Atlantic State University is taking the concept of stepping into someone else's shoes to help shed light on Savanna's homeless population. The fraternity is sleeping outside for a total of 48 hours and collecting donations for the less fortunate.
"I didn't get a very good sleep last night the concrete is not a very comfortable place to sleep," said Tim Waters.
The brotherhood has traded in their creature comforts for a taste of what the homeless population goes through.
"The rain was the worst part, it was very moist, little humidity, the sand gnats were everywhere," said Daniel Crafton.
Daniel Crafton said raising awareness about a group who can be forgotten is worth the discomfort.
"I realize how easy it is for people to come up to us and talk to us instead of the real homeless. People are much more inclined to come to us and give us canned goods," said Crafton.
All of the food, clothing, and blanket donations will go to the Old Savannah City Mission.
The fraternity is also relying on the generosity of others to bring them food to eat to see what it's like to be dependent.
"It gave me a new found respect for people who really have to deal with this and it makes what we're doing seem more important to me," said Casey Herrington.
Fraternity brother Tim Waters said when he does go back to his lifestyle he'll try not to take it for granted.
"They have to fight everyday to survive and they have to find food everyday and they have to find shelter to sleep, it kind of puts it in perspective, makes you realize what they have to go through every single day," said Waters.
The fraternity will wrap up its 48 hours at noon Sunday. If you would like to donate any goods for their homeless cause they can be found in front of the student union at Armstrong Atlantic State University.
