Soldier Charged In Hostage Taking At Fort Stewart Accepts Plea Deal

Posted:

Robert Quinones – a former soldier accused of taking hostages at Winn Army Hospital on Fort Stewart approximately two and a half years ago – has accepted a plea agreement in the case. He pleaded guilty to one count of Assault with Intent to commit a felony, kidnapping. All other charges against him were dropped. Quinones received a sentence of 86 months to serve. The judgment from United States District Judge Avant Edenfield recommends that the Bureau of Prisons evaluate Quinones' mental health and place him in a facility that will provide him the best available mental health treatment. He is also to serve three years on supervised release after his incarceration ends.

Robert Quinones had been medically discharged from the Army due to severe PTSD following several deployments to Iraq. He was living with his parents in Hinesville when he went on Post early Labor Day morning in 2010 and took several hostages at the hospital while demanding treatment. He spent the past two and a half years incarcerated at the Bulloch County Jail – not receiving treatment. One of the hostages he took that morning – Major Sabon Shelton – has become an advocate for and spoken out on behalf of Robert Quinones since his incarceration.
