Testimony has began in the case against Brian Jones and Kevin Brooks. They are charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault and a variety of other charges in relation to the events that led to a standoff at Savannah's popular Olde Pink House restaurant last May. The first witness on the stand is the young man police say was held in his home by one gunman while another took his father downtown to get money from a bank. Earl D. Hamilton, known as "little Earl", was twelve years old at the time. Testimony was stopped for a short time when Jones defense attorney Robert Attridge moved for a mistrial because of a statement made by "Little Earl" that he felt unfairly implicated his client in other illegal activities. Judge Michael Karpf denied the Motion.
The young man's testimony follows about 45 minutes of opening statements by the attorneys in the case. Assistant District Attorney Jerome Rothschild, Jr told jurors it was the events that happened at the house that are far more important to the case than the events at the Pink House that drew all the attention. Richard Darden, defense attorney for Brooks, told jurors that the only evidence of a kidnapping and armed robbery comes from a convicted drug dealer, the boy's father, referred to as, "Big Earl." A defense attorney for Jones says the evidence only supports the allegation that Jones took a Cadillac Escalade from the house as police surrounded the residence.
