SAVANNAH, GA -

The city of Savannah spent around $30,000 to erect this sign at the I-16 off ramp at 37th Street. It's one of three planned to be placed at entrances to the city to welcome visitors to the city. The signs and some other projects were budgeted for as part of a five year beautification project for the city. Jerry Flemming, Director of the city's Park and Tree Department says the signs cost more than you might expect because of the Special way they have to be built to confirm to Department of Transportation regulations that require they have a breakaway type construction since they are placed along highly trafficked roadways. The other two signs planned for the Talmadge Bridge and Forest Bridge entrances to the city are expected to cost approximately the same.
