What does electricity have to do with water pollution?
Burning fossil fuels to create the energy that powers our lights... microwaves and televisions releases pollutants into the air... including nitrogen oxides. Nitrogen oxides in the atmosphere mix with water vapor and eventually fall back to the Earth with rain... ending up in our lakes... rivers and streams.
Too much nitrogen in our waters can cause algae populations to boom... degrading water quality... harming aquatic animals and closing favorite recreation areas.
You can help reduce the impact of nitrogen oxides. Here is how....
Save electricity at home. Turn off lights in empty rooms... unplug cell phone charges and other electric items that are used infrequently and hang-dry clothes instead of using the dryer.
