SSU’s Marine Sciences Major Explores Local Waterways

SAVANNAH, GA -

Savannah State University not only offers students the opportunity to study the history of the land but also explore life under the water. If you enjoy learning about the ocean's ecosystem a degree in marine sciences might be up your alley.

"When I was about five-years-old my parents took me to the ocean and I was terrified so they picked me up and they threw me in it and ever since then I just couldn't get away from it,' said student Elijah Ferguson.

Sophomore Elijah Ferguson said the secrets of the deep blue sea intrigue him.

"I love the invertebrates in the ocean. There are so many types of them and they are so mysterious to me, the jellyfish, the plankton, it's just all very alien to me," said Ferguson.

Students can get up close and personal to these organisms when they go out on the water in research boats to collect samples.

The program coordinator for marine sciences said the major is growing in popularity.

"We've doubled our size in the last three years. We're growing, we're expanding, we're adding new buildings, we are buying more property on the marsh," said Dr. Chris Hintz.

A regular college admission to SSU is enough to get you in this field of study.

"It's very interdisciplinary. You've got to know a little bit about a lot of different things and it takes a lot of dedication. These classes are difficult," said Dr. Hintz.
