One of the topics of Tuesday night's State of the Union speech centered around making sure a high school diploma puts kids on a path to a good job by teaching technical and career skills. That's something the Savannah-Chatham Public School system is already doing through the career and technical programs offered at Woodville Tompkins High School. Students at the school can enroll in programs to teach them a variety of job skills ranging from nursing and aviation to mechanics and video production. School Principal Alfred McGuire says, "Students have the opportunity to gain the skills to be ready for both college as well as a career and so what we try to do is we try to blend in what students are learning in their classroom - math, science, english and social studies - with things that they are going to see when they go into the work site and so we try to infuse those things to make sure that students get a holistic approach to education."
Students from around the county can attend full-time or just take part in the specialty programs. Students even have the opportunity to take some skills and certification tests required for their career while still in school.
