SAVANNAH, GA -
Savannah-Chatham Animal Control is pushing for more dog adoptions before construction on kennels temporarily shrinks the holding space. Construction will begin February 25th.
Animal Control Officer Christina Sutherin said the building can hold 116 dogs but the renovations will close 32 kennels at a time for a few weeks.
"One wing will be shut down they will be able to do renovations then that wing will open back up and the process will be repeated until everything gets repaired," said Sutherin.
This is the first renovation to fix some of the cracked spaces in the concrete slabs that affect cleaning efforts in the kennels since animal control opened in 2010.
Some of the heating pads also need to be refinished after the wear and tear from the animals.
Officer Sutherin said if enough dogs aren't taken before construction begins animal control would have to turn to its last resort.
"We hold on to animals as long as we possibly can to adopt them, staff has been reaching out to rescue agencies, but ultimately if no one came to help us some of the animals unfortunately would be euthanized," said Sutherin.
On Wednesday afternoon there were around 95 dogs but Sutherin said that number can fluctuate hourly.
If you would like to adopt a dog animal control is open every day from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. On Thursdays animal control stays open until 6 p.m.
