LC Firefighters Utilize Demolition SIte for Training

February 10, 2013 -

This is not a fire, it's a real-life training exercise being conducted by the Lady's Island-St. Helena Fire Department at several buildings set for demolition by the county.

But before they're torn down the county said the department can run drills.....and they are very excited for the change of scenery.

"We very seldomly get buildings like this, opportunities like this, to actually come into a business in our district, and be able to organize the proper training, with every single shift that we have," said Seth Greer.

From running hoses through unfamiliar buildings to searching a dark smokey structure these men and women are taking this very seriously.

Firefighters say that having real-life training scenarios like this is an invaluable resource because it lets them hone their skills in ways they don't normally get to do.

"After a while firefighters get used to it and familiar with it like an old hat, know the ins and outs of a repetitious training or site, so this offers absolutely new things for our folks to do, new challenges, in a safe and controlled atmosphere," said firefighter, Lee Levesque.

"I don't think that I could express the gratitude that this entire department has for this opportunity we greatly appreciate everything we've been given, and we're going to use it to the highest extent that we can," said Greer.

Officials would like to remind everyone that they will be conducting training exercises on Lady's Island for the next four weeks and to be aware that you may see smoke in the area.
