Goose Creek Lawmaker Pushes to Disband SCHSL

February 8, 2013 -

A South Carolina Representative is pushing a bill that would disband the South Carolina High School League, the governing body of athletics in the state.

Rep. Joe Daning (R-92), of Goose Creek, introduced the bill earlier this month and it passed unanimously through committee. The bill, H3229, would "Create the division of interscholastic athletics to serve as the sole governing body of athletics for south Carolina public schools, to provide for a director of the division appointed by the superintendent of education, to provide matters about which the division shall promulgate regulations and for which the division may issue emergency regulations, to provide for the creation of an advisory committee to assist the division in evaluating the overall interscholastic athletic program and related recommendations."

This comes on the heels of the chaos of last years Division II---AAAA football playoffs, where Goose Creek were disqualified after a play was ruled ineligible. This lead to a series of appeals in both the courts and at the SCHSL. Bluffton did not find out until hours before that they would play Goose Creek after all.

NEWS 3 talked with Bluffton Coach Ken Cribb about this bill and he says this is ridiculous.

"When I first heard about it I really didn't believe that they would try something, you know, attempt something like this, but I guess they are now. It's real disheartening to know that a group of adults, things didn't go their way, so now they want to do away with the whole organization. I think they have no idea what they're trying to do, and what they're going to get into."
