The Department of Defense announced Thursday the upcoming
deployment of the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team to Afghanistan in support of
Operation Enduring Freedom.
The Vanguard Brigade is expected to depart their home
station in February for a 9-month deployment as part of the International
Security and Assistance Force under the command of Regional Command – East.
The team of approximately 2,200 Soldiers will provide
support and training to the Afghan National Security Forces as they continue to
improve their ability and leadership in operations.
The unit has been training for this mission since July
including a month-long mission readiness exercise at the Joint Readiness
Training Center at Fort Polk, Louisiana in November.
"The Soldiers of the Vanguard Brigade are highly
motivated, incredibly well trained and look forward to this opportunity to
serve our Nation and assist the Afghan people and we're proud to be a part of
the team." said Col. Kimo C. Gallahue, the brigade's commanding officer.
The 4th IBCT last deployed to Iraq from July 2010 to July
of 2011 where their mission was to strengthen Iraqi Security Forces and
transition missions and facilities in the Al Anbar Province to the Government
of Iraq contributing to provincial security and an enduring Iraq-US strategic
partnership.
