'Iron Man 3' could be coming to Wilmington

Is “Iron Man 3” coming to Wilmington?

North Carolina film officials aren’t saying despite two reports the blockbuster movie with Robert Downey Jr. could be shot in the state.

Aaron Syrette, director of the North Carolina Film Office, told NBC-17, "I cannot comment on any project that I may or may not be currently working on."

And a spokesman at the Wilmington Regional Film Commission said the commission does not comment on potential clients, and prefers that the clients make the comments.

On Tuesday, The Detroit Free Press reported that Michigan had not been selected to host the filming, and that North Carolina won the bid for the Marvel Studios blockbuster.

Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville told the Free Press the Michigan Film Office upped its offer to $20 million to match North Carolina’s offer, but that North Carolina guaranteed the money.

And a website that covers entertainment news, the Latino Review, reported that "a close Marvel source" said that it is "90 percent likely that Iron Man's next Avenger-less outing will be shot in the Port City of Wilmington, N.C. It's said to be a massive affair with Marvel taking over 10 sound stages at Screen Gems studios. “

The first two "Iron Man" films were primarily shot in Southern California.

Marvel Studios could not be reached for comment.

Shane Black will take over directorial duties from Jon Favreau, who helmed the first two films. Black's credits include 2005's "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," which also starred Downey.

Black made a name for himself in the 1980s for writing the action films su"Lethal Weapon," "Lethal Weapon 2" and "The Last Boy Scout."
