Benedictine Military School’s (BC) Bob Herndon resigns as head football coach. Herndon will continue teaching at BC for the remainder of the 2008-09 school year.

Benedictine Military School Head Football Coach and BC alumnus Bob Herndon has resigned. “We are enormously grateful for the good work which Bob has given to his alma mater,” Father Ziemkiewicz, O.S.B. Benedictine’s headmaster said in announcing Herndon’s resignation, adding, “we wish Bob and his family the best.”

Although Herndon has resigned as head football coach, he will continue as a teacher at BC until the end of the 2008-09 school year. BC Athletic Director Mark Stroud, also a BC graduate, will serve as the school’s new head football coach.

Herndon began coaching at BC in 2006 and in 2007 led the school to its first post-season play-off game in several years.  Prior to coaching at BC, Herndon was head football coach at South Effingham High School, the 2004 Region 3-AAA Sub Region Champion and post season playoff participants in 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005.  He has coached at several other schools during his career, including Forsyth Central High School in Cummings, GA; Fitzgerald High School in Fitzgerald, GA; Savannah Christian Preparatory School; and Jenkins High School.

He has more than 30 years coaching experience and has received numerous honors, including his selection as the All-Star Coach for the South. The Georgia Athletic Coaches Association (GACA) selected Herndon to coach the South team in the 2008 North-South All Star Football Classic that will take place December 29, 2PM at Memorial Stadium in Columbus, GA.  His other coaching honors include Savannah Morning News Coach of the Year, Atlanta Touchdown Club Coach of the Week, six-time winner of the GACA’s Coach of the Year, and Georgia-Florida All-Star Football Coach.  A BC Alumnus, Herndon received a B.S. degree in Physical Education from the University of Georgia and was an Honor Graduate with an associate degree from Gordon Military College. While at Gordon he was a two year starter for the football team.

Stroud has served as Benedictine’s athletic director since August 2008 and defensive coordinator for the football team since 2006. Prior to joining the Benedictine coaching staff he coached at Richmond Hill High School for five years and seven years at Claxton High School.  During his time at Claxton, Stroud was the Defensive Coordinator, Head Basketball Coach and Head Baseball coach.  He earned Region Coach of the Year two years, was the Atlanta Tip Off Club Region Coach of the Year twice, Savannah Morning News Press Coach of the Year, and racked up 125 wins in his seven seasons.  In those wins, Stroud coached his teams to two region championships in basketball, made the Final Four twice and was the State Basketball Runner Up in 2002.

A 1985 graduate of Benedictine Military School, Mark was a diverse athlete playing football, basketball and baseball.  He went on to attend Armstrong Atlantic State University and earned a B.S. Degree in Health and Physical Education and later earned a masters degree in Educational Leadership from Georgia Southern University.
