COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - State health officials say there are 16 confirmed cases of swine flu in South Carolina.
Department of Health and Environmental Control spokesman Jim Beasley said Sunday that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed three more cases to add to the 13 reported on Saturday.
Of those cases, 15 are related to a Newberry private school students’ trip to Mexico, where the virus first appeared. The 16th case is in Laurens County.
Beasley said some people have been asked to take voluntary steps of isolation, in which people who show symptoms are separated from the healthy population, and quarantine, when people who have been exposed are asked to stay away from healthy people.
The CDC Web site reported 15 cases of swine flu in the state Sunday evening.
